Belaquo Bonebreaker is one of the most renowned pit fighters of Meereen, a former slave whose prowess in the arena made him a legend. His name, a title earned through his signature weapon—a heavy, bone-shattering flail—speaks to the brutal art he practiced. After Daenerys Targaryen's conquest of the city, he was freed from his chains, but the liberation brought an unexpected crisis of identity. The fighting pits, the sole source of his glory and livelihood, were closed by the new queen, leaving him and his fellow champions without purpose or income.

The Plea for the Pits

Belaquo was one of seven famed fighters brought before Daenerys by the nobleman Hizdahr zo Loraq to plead for the reopening of the fighting pits. He stood before the queen and argued that his freedom was meaningless without the right to fight. "I train since three," he declared, "I kill since six. Mother of Dragons says I am free. Why not free to fight?" When Daenerys offered him a place in her own military companies, he refused, insisting that he fought for himself, for gold and glory, not for a master. Following Daenerys's disappearance and Hizdahr's ascension to the throne, Belaquo Bonebreaker's loyalty was rewarded. He was appointed as one of King Hizdahr's personal protectors, a fearsome member of the king's new guard, which also included other pit fighters like Goghor the Giant, Khrazz, and the Spotted Cat. This role placed him at the heart of Meereen's political intrigue, serving a king whose peace was fragile and whose rule was contested by the Sons of the Harpy and the Yunkai'i. He was present in the throne room when the Yunkish envoys delivered the severed head of Admiral Groleo, a provocation that threatened to shatter the peace entirely.

Belaquo's position as a king's man was not absolute. When Ser Barristan Selmy, acting as the Queen's Hand, moved to depose Hizdahr, he summoned Belaquo and the other pit fighters to a council of war.
